Daily Work My daily life in the back office

Supporting Air Japan's operations in the back office by understanding the flight crew and cultures of various countries.

Kazue Shinjo.

Job title: Staff(Flight Operations Department, Operations Promotion Office, Flight Operations Management Group) Joined: 2023

Every day is a cross-cultural exchange Rewarding experience of working with aircrew from around the world

Having been exposed to English from an early age, I began to think that I wanted to work in a job where I could use English in the future, and started my career as a ground staff member on international flights. Currently, I work in the back office of Air Japan, coordinating flight crew schedules, monitoring flight operations and arranging immigration and entry documents.
English is the main language of communication in our work. Crew members from various countries have their own cultural differences, and even if we communicate in a way that is easy to understand, there may be differences in perception, so we communicate while being aware of the cultural background of the flight crew.
Although I have few opportunities to come into direct contact with customers, I find great satisfaction in working with crew members from all over the world and supporting safe and smooth flight operations for customers from behind the scenes.

Tackle unforeseen circumstances with conviction and a sense of responsibility

The Air Japan office, with its many foreigners, is always full of lively conversation. Apart from face-to-face communication, we communicate through various tools such as emails and phone calls, but at the end of the day, we always get a "Thank you! or a smile and a "Thank you!" at the end of the day, even during the short alcohol checks of the flight crew, is one of the most attractive aspects of the job.
However, unforeseen circumstances are not uncommon. Equipment conditions and weather conditions can affect flight operations... At such times, I actively check with my colleagues and supervisors to ensure that I can carry on with my work. I try to be confident and responsible for the work I am responsible for, because if I continue with my work in an ambiguous manner, it not only causes trouble for the flight crew, but also leads to delays in the operation of the flight.

The goal is to build trust, to be relied upon and to be a stronghold.

To promote understanding of the business, I have been on a jumpseat between Haneda (HND) and Taipei Songshan (TSA). I learnt about the front line of flight operations, which I cannot usually see in the office, from briefing methods and communication with air traffic control to piloting techniques. Through this experience, I feel that my challenge is to grasp more information from the perspective of the flight crew, so that I can respond in a timely manner and contribute to on-time operations.
Working in the flight operations department requires a lot of knowledge about operations as well as a cultural understanding of the flight crew. As I do not directly board the aircraft, I have to understand each job description and build a deeper relationship of trust with the flight crew. I would like to continue to support the aircrew so that I can be their rock and roll, while valuing smooth communication.

Message

Due to the fact that I have been learning English since childhood, I had a vague idea that I wanted to work using English in the future. By supporting the flight crew, I am able to be involved in aircraft operations from a variety of angles while using English, and I find my work rewarding every day. I hope that everyone who is looking for a job will find a company where they can work with a sense of fulfilment.
